On this and other computers (MacOS), I keep all of my files stored locally, so I am not using the 'Files on Demand' feature. I have been searching our good friend Google for answers but haven't found any. This behavior ONLY happens on my MS Surface Book 2 computer. But having to do that each time for files you use regularly isn't ideal. I can open the files manually by going to "File" > "Open" > "File Location" that works. I have check "Apple Icon" > "System Preferences" > "General" > "Recent Items: set to 10."
The version we have is Microsoft Excel for Mac Version 16.29 (19090802). The files are stored locally on their desktop. We checked to make sure that office is up to date. This behavior is also true when my scanner saves a document in my OneDrive folder - it takes a while to sync on its own so I continually have to view online and download my scans which is very annoying. Strangely, the verifying process failed and multiplied itself nearly a dozen times, which unsurprisingly didn’t work at all.

If I wait 10 minutes or so, it eventually syncs. I ran into this exact issue recently when using a Combo Update for Mac OS X on a particular machine getting it up to date with OS X 10.11.6. When a user opens a document (Excel or Word) it should for the most part appear in Recent. OneDrive says that it is up to date, and pausing and restarting sync does no good.
Check for the name of your misbehaving SharePoint folder - if its there with a 'paused' (or maybe it means 'broken') symbol like this (-) next to the name, that is what you have to get rid.
Instead, go to your file explorer folder list under 'OneDrive -I have several users not able to view recent files. Theres nobody called 'OneDrive - My Files' for a start. I have a weird issue with office 2019 for mac.
